Campus Housing exists to provide quality housing services to ECU students and support their quest for academic and personal success.
Neighborhoods and Halls
Student housing at East Carolina University is based in three neighborhoods: College Hill, West End, and Central. Like any community, all three neighborhoods offer some common elements – such as access to key services and programs – while each neighborhood has its unique features.
All of our neighborhoods are within walking distance to the academic buildings where students have a majority of their classes. Dining is available in the College Hill Neighborhood at Todd Dining Hall; Central and West End Neighborhoods are served by the West End Dining Hall.
College Hill - Steve and Nancy Ballard Hall, Jones Hall, Legacy Hall, Tyler Hall, Scott Hall, College Hill Suites
West End - Clement Hall, White Hall, Greene Hall, Garrett Hall, and Fletcher Hall
Central - Cotten Hall, Fleming Hall, Jarvis Hall, and Umstead Hall
Living Learning Communities (LLCs)
Living Learning Communities (LLCs) were created to provide students with the opportunity to experience the transition to a larger university in smaller, more personal groups. They are designed to assist in the academic transition to university instruction, to support the student-faculty interaction beyond the classroom, and to encourage positive student connections within East Carolina University.
Students that reside in a learning community take at least two classes together in the Fall semester. Research shows that students that reside in these special living communities tend to have higher grade point averages than other students, and their retention rate towards graduation from the university is much higher than students living in other living situations.
While each LLC at East Carolina University is unique in their focus and theme, all share the same major goals for students:
- Achieve academic success
- Be actively engaged in academic, local, and/or global communities
- Have opportunities to discover their leadership potential

Freshman/First-Year Live On-Campus Requirement
East Carolina University freshmen (defined as students who have completed fewer than 24 hours of college credit – excluding AP, dual enrollment, or early college hours) and first-year students are required to live in college housing for at least two semesters. Exempted from this policy are students who have reached their 21st birthday prior to the first day of classes; veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces; married students; students with dependent children (living with them); or students who commute to school daily from the permanent, legal residence of their parents (within a 35-mile radius of campus).
To learn more about this requirement and apply for exemption, visit the ECU Housing website.
