ECU Statement on Capitol Attack

ECU Statement on Capitol Attack

The events that took place in Washington, D.C., yesterday are deeply disturbing and horrifying. Please join me in condemning the attack on our Capitol and in elevating our own commitment to doing the right thing.

It is rather easy to state the support of freedom of expression while condemning violence. What seems more difficult this morning is to collectively admit that this unfortunate historical episode was avoidable. Lack of foresight put those Capitol police officers in an impossible situation. Words and respect matter. I believe if leaders had said the right thing at the right time, perhaps this episode could have been avoided. We should all expect better of others and ourselves. This is especially true in the midst of a public health crisis.

Respect, civility, and modeling positive behaviors will be essential to recovery as President-Elect Joe Biden is inaugurated in two weeks. Let’s show the world how to do just that.

Thank you Pirates and please, be good to each other.

Respectfully,
RonM
